Living on the Gold Coast, chances are you have a few trees providing shade for your property. and welcome attraction for local wildlife. But not every tree is a blessing.
Trees can often become hazardous, diseased or structurally unsound. Waiting too long to call for tree removal can cost you more than just your peace of mind.
Here’s how to spot the red flags early and make the right call.
1. The Tree Is Leaning More Than Before
Any tree might lean, typically when need for sunlight is the reason. But it becomes a serious concern if the angle has recently changed or looks extreme. This can indicate root instability, soil movement, or wind damage, and the tree could be on the brink of collapse.
Tip: Take photos and compare over time. Any rapid change is a red flag.
2. Visible Rot or Fungal Growth
If you notice mushrooms at the base of your tree, or signs of soft, crumbly bark, the tree could well be rotting from the inside. Fungi can feed on the tree’s internal structure, weakening its integrity and eventually causing it to fall.
Look for:
Shelf fungi or mushrooms
Soft, spongy bark
Cracks near the base
3. Dead or Dropping Branches
If the tree is dropping a few dead twigs, there's nothing to worry about. But when full dead limbs drop for no reason, it's a sign the tree is unable to support itself. This becomes a serious safety risk, especially in backyards or near pathways.
Branches that overhang your roof or driveway can lead to thousands of dollars in damage.
4. Cracks in the Tree's Trunk
Trees are living, growing systems — split bark or deep cracks along the trunk can indicate a structural failure. Splitting along the trunk will compromise the tree’s strength.
5. Visible Root Damage
A tree is anchored by its root system. Any interference caused by construction, trenching, including compacted soil, could weaken the root system.
It's a warning sign when surface roots become exposed, damaged, or lifted. When there's exposed base flare, or when the tree is suddenly unstable, get it checked by a qualified arborist. A professional opinion will determine if tree removal is best.
6. The Tree Is Hollow
Hollow doesn’t always mean dead — but all too often, it means the tree is weakened. While they may still grow and leaf out, the problem for hollow trees is that they are far more vulnerable to wind and storm damage. Tree removal can
7. Invasive or Dangerous Species
Some tree species are just bad news — they break easily, attract pests, or damage plumbing with aggressive roots. Common culprits in Queensland include camphor laurels, umbrella trees, and cocos palms. Tree removal is advised.
